One of the listservs I have been on for years is “Calico-L” or the CALL (Computer Aided Language Learning) list. Wednesday after noon at the end of the day a message was sent out to the list:

This has prompted an avalanche of messages from people looking to get invited to Google Wave. For those that don’t know, Google is seeding accounts to this service, by handing out invites to users with accounts, to send out to new people. The bulk of the messages look like this:

I have an account,  harlanwallach@googlewave.com, and frankly I have no idea what to do with this service, or why all these people want it. Never the less, it is something, apparently very much in demand. Google has really promoted and driven a web based promotional campaign for a new service, that is frankly, astounding. No real surprise there I guess.

If anyone want to share a wave with me, or whatever, feel free.

Maybe someday we can have an awesome render farm like the one Pixar used for Toy Story:

The story has been picked up by CNN Radio, CBS, and several international press outlets. This is one of the major research initiatives we support here in NUIT A&RT NUAMPS. It is pretty exciting to be a part of a project that is doing basic science and showing some core advances in women’s health and fertility preservation. Google started sending out invites to one of its new services this week, Google Voice.  For a detailed list of features of Google Voice check out the about page on Google’s website.

The basic idea is that you can use Google Voice as a single phone number that will ring to your cell phone, home phone and office phone all at the same time (if this is how you configure it).  Your voicemails will be stored online just like your Gmail, the voicemails will also be transcribed for you and emailed to you if you want.  There are options for SMS as well.  The list of features is pretty impressive, I would highly recommend requesting an invite if it interests you.
