Also from the whitehouse.gov:

Ensure the Full and Free Exchange of Ideas through an Open Internet and Diverse Media Outlets

  • Protect the Openness of the Internet: Support the principle of network neutrality to preserve the benefits of open competition on the Internet.
  • Encourage Diversity in Media Ownership: Encourage diversity in the ownership of broadcast media, promote the development of new media outlets for expression of diverse viewpoints, and clarify the public interest obligations of broadcasters who occupy the nation’s spectrum.

And in particular interest to A&RT:

Improve America’s Competitiveness

  • Invest in the Sciences: Double federal funding for basic research over ten years, changing the posture of our federal government to one that embraces science and technology.
  • Invest in University-Based Research: Expand research initiatives at American colleges and universities. Provide new research grants to the most outstanding early-career researchers in the country.

I realize there are many important pressing issues for our new president to address, but I am hoping these don’t get lost in the shuffle.

African Maps Redux

If you should happen to wander through the NUL’s InfoCommons, you may notice a familiar sight on all of the unused desktops:

You may recall these images from this blog. NUAMPS partnered with the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies (or the Africana Library) at Northwestern University to create these rotating details from the Herskovitz’ collection of African Maps. Selecting a large number of the images (over 100) I put together a slideshow that plays as a screensaver. As a mac addict the challenge for me came in finding a way to replicate the Apple OS X screensaver slideshow function. Fortunately some very clever people figured out a way to do this for me.

The result is pretty spectacular — an unsynchronized visual orchestra of details of maps panning, zooming and moving around in a tranquil display across the room.
